#sparkchamber 032326 — Sarah Elizabeth Creskey
What a pleasure to welcome Toronto-based multidisciplinary artist Sarah Elizabeth Creskey to the #sparkchamber today. Influenced by her background in Medieval theology, clothing design, and “just simply dogs,” Sarah works with textiles and screen printing, “small batch and slowly made.” She cuts her stencils by hand — “I’m a fan of this method because I enjoy the limitations. I’m a fan of limitations. Limitations in both the design and the output, as each run will only give you about 50 prints before the stencil begins to dissolve and you wash it away and you will never ever print with that exact stencil again. It’s very exclusive. Like a club. I should hire a bouncer.”
Her current obsession is large-scale, hand-punched rugs, a practice she began in 2021, “at a time when I felt my world crumble around me. The punch needle provided a safe and comforting refuge from the chaos. The inherent slow beauty of the rug pulled me in. slow. slow. slow.”
Sarah is participating in the Gather in the County market in Picton, ON on June 13th. The indoor/outdoor market takes over “the historic Crystal Palace, an idyllic spot in the heart of Prince Edward County, where 90+ textile makers, art installations, small-batch producers, indie dyers, artists, collectors, and community guilds offer a wide range of handmade and vintage textile wares and supplies for sale.” The curated event strives to “showcase the cultural value of craft and the rich tradition of textile arts.” We’ll remind you as the date approaches, but if you are — or plan to be — in the area, mark your calendar!
1.] Where do ideas come from?
If you piss me off, if I fall in love with you, If you are a dog that has lost one eye, you will likely become my art.
2.] What is the itch you are scratching?
A deeper magic
3.] Early bird or night owl? Tortoise or hare?
Too fast and I won’t have time to fall in love, too slow and I’ll fall out of love before it’s done. Well isn’t love fickle.
When basic human needs no longer feel like a priority, that is a wave you follow to the end, day or night. But the dog always gets walked in the morning.
4.] How do you know when you are done?
Ugh honestly it’s the only feeling in the world I truly trust.
